Tourney Talk -- Day 2

Hey, let's do it again. What's a full day of games without some water-cooler banter? Plus, I'll reveal the answer to yesterday's trivia question.

Who do you like in today's games? Any upsets brewing? Will there be more madness than Thursday brought? No Rafferty today, so that's a bummer.

Tourney Talk

Picking this year's tournament gave me fits. I found it really difficult to get a good feel. Not sure why, but the pairings definitely didn't help. An underrated Gonzaga got a terrible draw having to play West Virginia in Pittsburgh. Murray State is a very likeable squad, but got a weak seed (6), so it has Marquette waiting in the second round. San Diego State? Like 'em. North Carolina State? Like 'em. They play each other in the first round? Drat. It went like that a lot.

A few other thoughts:

• CBS should put Charles Barkley on the NFL Sunday morning show. First off, he has personality. And while he doesn't know ...

Idiot's Guide to Picking Your Bracket

I'm not a huge college basketball guy, but of course I'm obligated to enter several NCAA Tournament pools. But I know very little about field - embarrassingly little for someone who works in the sports world. And I can't even use my alma mater as an excuse since Northwestern was actually decent his year (getting mentioned on Selection Sunday for the first time in team history - even if to say they lost out on the bubble).

So how do I make an entry that has a shot? I'm looking for value. With ESPN and Yahoo having data on what teams people are picking in their pools (with million of entries), we can quickly get a good read on the marketplace. Then I turned to two sources for rankings: Nate Silver of Five Thirty Eight (and formerly of Baseball Prospectus) and Ken Pomeroy, who's got a good reputation as an NCAA basketball advanced stat guru.

A Fool and His Money Are Soon Parted: Or How I Lost My Ass in Vegas

I was somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when an idea began to take hold: I needed some basis for betting that evening's college basketball games when I arrived in Vegas in two hours. I called Yahoo!'s Brad Evans who can rattle off anything from where each team's three-point shooting defense ranks to who the third big man on Butler is. Brad told me he liked Arizona +9 over Duke and Butler +4.5 over Wisconsin. He also urged me to bet Arizona in the second half, and to take the over on the game.

My AL Tout Wars team
We did the AL Tout Wars draft Saturday morning, once again in "The Bubble" at the Sirius/XM studios. It was a different Tout experience than my usual drafts at Tout - lately I haven't paid for closers there, or spent much on my outfielders. But I'm also one to take the values where they fall. So to that end, here's my squad:

My entry in the RotoWire Fantasy Baseball Online Championship was Monday night. Here's my quick take on the draft - this is a 12-team mixed league, 5x5 categories, 30 rosters spots (23 active), with no trades in the league. It has a top prize of $50,000 and a league prize of $1,400.
