NHL Playoff Observations -- Friday (Thursday, too)

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Four shots, three goals ... and his second career hat playoff hat trick. The third goal was Sidney Crosby's 100th playoff point, a feat accomplished in merely 75 games. Plus he's the fifth fastest to hit that 100-point mark. Who was faster? Just Wayne Gretzky (46 games), Mario Lemieux (50), Jari Kurri (67) and Mike Bossy (74). Now that's elite company.
  • Where-o-where has my Brad Richards gone? Oh, where-o-where could he be? Oh right -- behind the play, struggling to catch up. Sometimes skills trickle away; sometimes they just fall off a cliff. Sad.

Building the Perfect Beast

Like everyone else, I'm looking for that edge in my leagues to skew the odds in my favor. Many fantasy players traditionally load up on the stud hitters and stream pitchers at the end of their staff to pick up those counting stats without killing the ratios. I'm one of those people, however, my pitching stream has been as weak as a 70 year old with a bad prostate.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Round Two Wednesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Patrick Sharp is 31-3 this season. Yes, the Hawks have only lost three times with him in the lineup. Wow.
  • Moths to a light -- the Wings were puck focused all night long. That will change next game ... might not change the outcome by much, though.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Round Two Tuesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Team captains do not act like children. They do not blame others. They stand up and accept responsibility. Alexander Ovechkin has been looking in that fun house mirror again. Have I ever mentioned how I much I can't stand people like that?
  • Special teams -- will they be the story of the second round? They sure were in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Monday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Chris Hadfield returned to Earth at 10:31 p.m. Eastern time a sad man -- Canada's space station commander is a HUGE Leafs' fan. No wonder he had a hard time getting out of the space capsule. He had to dry his tears first.
  • Andrew Ference arrived at the arena in a walking boot. Wade Redden was a late scratch. And the Bruins lost Dennis Seidenberg after two shifts. They may have gotten out of the first round, but they won't get far with a back-end held together with chewing gum and bailing wire.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Sunday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Optimus Reim. Reim Minister. I don't care if the nicknames are any good; I just know the goalie is. James Reimer has proved his detractors wrong and even Roberto Luongo has become a fan. Bobby Lou's tweet after the game? #REIM4SOCHI. Now that's funny.
  • Ho hum, Henrik Lundqvist was the difference for the Rangers. Again. The guy was his typical brilliant self. But why isn't anyone talking about Braden Holtby who has allowed one fewer goal in the same six games? Just wondering ...

NHL Playoff Observations -- Saturday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • What's the over-under on the number of questions Erik Karlsson will get about "the Matt Cooke incident." You know, team owner Eugene Melnyk still believes it was deliberate and says he is getting forensic evidence to prove it. Quick, take away his tin foil.
  • Man, the Isles looked good early -- they should have been up by at least two. But they just couldn't sustain it. Dang.

15 Reasons Why You Never Draft Pitching Early

Revisionist history is fun, right? Hind sight is always 20-20. But this theory is neither revisionist nor hind sight. Not drafting pitchers early in fantasy baseball drafts is not new. The following is a fifteen-pitcher starting pitching staff (fourteen of them not named Matt Harvey) with an ADP of 200 or higher (as of 4/4/13) on Mock Draft Central. It will make you feel kind of silly for drafting David Price, Cole Hamels, Gio Gonzalez, or others of their ilk.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Friday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • James Reimer, two; Roberto Luongo, zero. Playoff wins, that is -- isn't that what Leafs' fans thought they'd get out of a Bobby Lou trade? Any chance they eat crow?
  • Where are you, Rick Nash? Brad Richards? And how much cash is tied up in you two stiffs?

NHL Playoff Observations -- Wednesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • Read my lips, Dion Phaneuf – hit the guy if you’re going to pinch. Better yet, DO NOT PINCH. He’s a decent player, but a crappy decision maker. Yikes.

  • David Krejci is money in the bank in the postseason. His hattie was just his third, three-point effort in his last four games. Ten points in four games. Wow.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Tuesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • No offense to Peter Budaj, but Montreal has no hope without Carey Price between the pipes. He was terrific before he went down. #HabsDown.
  • The Isles are like a bad rash -- they just won't go away. They haven't figured out they're supposed to lose to the Penguins. Andrew MacDonald will be hard to replace, though.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Sunday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Nine seconds, Vancouver. Nine seconds. That smell is worse than a pig farmer stirring up his liquid manure tank.
  • The Sens and Habs clearly hate each other. But then again, the Habs hate each other, too. Seems like a marriage made in heaven if you're a Sens' fan.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Saturday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Strong skating is one of Drew Doughty's calling cards. Yet David Backes blew Doughty away on a breakaway in the first period. And by several steps. Doughty's overall game has been in slow, steady decline since his sophomore season. Is he suffering from Dion Phaneuf-itis?
  • Don Cherry was at it again: "He's a lazy hockey player." He is Evgeni Malkin. Now if only he was Canadian ....

NHL Playoff Observations -- Friday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Pass the WD-40 - Sidney Crosby says he felt rusty. He only scored two goals on eight shots and won 53.8 percent of his face-offs. I can't wait to see what the penetrating oil knocks loose next game.
  • Patrick Kane's stickhandling ability is absolutely sick. He made that fourth goal happen and in a phone booth, to boot. For that, I'll forgive him for the mullet with the racing stripes. But just this time.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Thursday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Did you know New York State has a unemployment benefits calculator on its Department of Labor website? Larry Brooks will likely be the first to pass that info along to John Tortorella in a week or so ...

NHL Playoff Observations -- Wednesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • The best trade that was never made. Yup. Roberto Luongo. Otherwise, Joe Cannata (yah, I don't know either) would have been in the blue paint tonight. Bobby Lou has something to prove and he'll carry this series. He'll also take the end of his composite and stick it up Alain Vignault's ...
  • OK, so the green men are one thing, but let's kill the knock-offs. The guys in Pittsburgh are frightening. Black tights with bright yellow suspenders that hold up bright yellow tutus? Men in bike shorts are bad enough ...

NHL Playoff Observations -- Tuesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:
  • Jonathan Quick was dominant for 73 minutes and 21 seconds. The last four seconds? Not so much. It's too bad that such a dominant performance was marred by such brain fart.
  • Josh Harding is to Jose Theodore as Patrick Kane is to Denis Savard. Discuss.

NFL Draft Wrap - Round 1

With Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III going first and second, the first round of the 2012 NFL draft changed the landscape of fantasy football right off the bat. This year's version could not have been more different. It took over an hour, and eight picks, before anyone was chosen who would make even a small impact in 2013 fantasy football, with speedy receiver Tavon Austin going to the Rams. It was nearly another hour before a quarterback was drafted, with E.J. Manuel going to the Bills. Manuel was the only quarterback taken, and no running backs were chosen. Let's assess.

A Little Knowledge is Dangerous: Overreacting to Velocity Readings Early On

In years past, I would have offered the panicked Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay owners 50 or 60 cents on their draft-day dollars for their struggling former stars. But even though I intended to offer Hyun-Jin Ryu for Halladay in NL Tout after two starts, I didn't because Halladay's velocity was down. From 92 mph in 2011, to 90.6 last year to 89.7 in four starts this season.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Two Weeks to Go!

Only Two weeks until the real NFL Draft takes place, and I look like an absolute fool for even trying to predict what actually happens.  I am operating under the assumption that there will not be any trades.  With that being said, I fully expect there to be a significant amount of movement, starting with the Cleveland Browns at pick #6.  This draft isn't loaded with elite talent, but it is a very deep draft and there is a ton of quality that can be found in later rounds.

My AL Tout Wars team
We did the AL Tout Wars draft Saturday morning, once again in "The Bubble" at the Sirius/XM studios. It was a different Tout experience than my usual drafts at Tout - lately I haven't paid for closers there, or spent much on my outfielders. But I'm also one to take the values where they fall. So to that end, here's my squad:
